»> Helena Boskovic <helenc@earthlink.net> - 3/19/00 12.13 AM »> Mr. Swearer:
I am writing to strongly protest your intention to close Parson's Printmaking Studio. I have been coming to the studio for over a year, and while my experience there doesn't compare to that of the dozens of people who have been working there for ten or twenty years--both as students and faculty for whom this displacement would mean not only nonexistent facilities but no livelihood--the Printshop has become a vital part of my life as a young artist. I have found no better facility in the city with as diverse a student population, nor as knowledgeable a staff. To consider changing such a rich facet of Parson's life is a deep insult to the many people for whom the Printshop is a daily resource; to do so for the sake of a bigger cafeteria is cruelly absurd.
I will be forwarding letters to the Board of Trustees, all Deans, alumni and the press. This attempt to sell Out the students of Parson's will not go unchallenged.
Sincerely,
Helena Boskovic

Thank you for your e-mail. We have not made a decision to eliminate printmaking from Parsons, nor have we attempted to judge the relative value of Printmaking as a part of our academic program. However, we are initiating a large scale, multi-year, multi-million renovation effort for the Parsons complex that is long overdue, and under a very tight schedule. We are not "trading" a student union on the 4th floor for Printmaking, but our planning process for determining the future of Printmaking at Parsons will not be completed before the renovation begins this spring. So we must temporarily suspend the operation of the facility until the printmaking planning committee, and the Dean's Office, can develop a considered plan for the program's future. We are exploring the possibility of using another school's facilities during the interim period, among other options, and will keep the printmaking community posted.
